K-1 visa interview: questions and documents to bring
Published October 27, 2026
After USCIS approves the I-129F petition, the case moves to the US embassy or consulate in the fiancé(e)'s country, which schedules an interview. The consular officer decides whether to issue the K-1 visa, and much of the interview is about the relationship. This page covers what people are commonly asked and what they bring. It is general information; the embassy's own interview instructions list what you must bring, and they differ by post.
Common questions
Officers ask about the relationship in ordinary words, to see that the couple knows each other and plans to marry. Typical questions:
- How and when did you meet? When did you first meet in person?
- How often do you talk, and how (calls, WhatsApp, video)?
- When and where did he or she propose? When and where will you marry?
- What does your fiancé(e) do for work? Where do they live? Who is in their family?
- Have you met each other's families? Where did you go when you visited?
- Where will you live after the wedding?
Answer honestly and in your own words. Nobody expects perfect recall of dates; consistent, specific answers matter more.
Documents people bring
- Passport, the interview appointment letter and the DS-160 confirmation page.
- Civil documents the embassy lists: birth certificate, police certificates, and documents ending any earlier marriage.
- Medical exam results, as the embassy instructs.
- Financial support documents from the US petitioner, as the embassy lists them.
- Passport-style photos if requested.
- Evidence of the relationship, updated since the petition: see below.

Relationship evidence for the interview
Bring the kind of evidence sent with the I-129F, brought up to date: photos from recent visits, travel records, and messages from the months since the petition was filed. A short, organized folder works better than a stack:
- Photos in date order with captions, including family on both sides.
- A one-page calendar of messages per month from first contact to last month, and a dated sample of messages.
- Boarding passes and bookings for each visit.
- Wedding plans: venue booking, invitations or a letter of intent.
See K-1 visa evidence for what to include. Proof of Relationship builds the photo and message pages from your chat export and photos in a few minutes, so you can make an up-to-date copy right before the interview.
Common questions
What questions are asked at a K-1 visa interview?
Mostly about the relationship: how you met, when you met in person, how often you talk, the proposal, wedding plans, and your fiancé(e)'s job, family and home.
Should I bring chat messages to the K-1 interview?
Many people bring a short, dated selection with a monthly summary, updated since the petition. The officer may not ask for it, but it is there if they do.
How long is a K-1 visa interview?
Often short, from a few minutes to around twenty, depending on the post and the case.
What if I don't know an answer?
Say so honestly. Guessing and getting it wrong is worse than not remembering a date.
