Proof of relationship for a K-1 visa
The I-129F petition asks the US citizen to show two things about the relationship: that the couple met in person within the two years before filing (unless a waiver applies), and that they intend to marry. In practice petitioners also include evidence that the relationship is real and continuing, because that is what the officer, and later the consulate, is weighing. This guide covers what people send, what works, and how to organize it. It is general information, not legal advice; the form instructions and, where the case is complicated, a lawyer, control.
What petitioners usually include
| Evidence | What it shows | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Photos together | Time spent together, family involved, places visited | Dated and captioned: who is in it, where, when. A dozen across the relationship beats a hundred from one trip. |
| Travel records | The in-person meeting within two years | Boarding passes, passport stamps, hotel bookings, itineraries with both names. |
| Chat and call history | Ongoing contact over the whole period | Where most people go wrong: see below. |
| Money transfers, gifts, shared expenses | Support and commitment | Receipts with names and dates. |
| Statements from family and friends | Others know the couple as a couple | Specific, first-hand, signed. See the affidavit guide; the same shape works for an engaged couple. |
| Engagement evidence | Intent to marry | Ring receipt, engagement announcement, venue or wedding plans, letters of intent from both. |
The chat problem
A couple who has been talking daily for two years has tens of thousands of messages. Printing them produces six hundred pages that nobody reads and that bury the few things an officer needs to see: that the contact was continuous, that it was a real conversation, and that it ran through the whole period and not just around the filing date.
What experienced filers and the forums converge on is a different shape:
- A summary of how much you wrote, month by month. A count per month from the first message to the last shows continuity on one page. A gap is visible too, which is fine: explain it in your statement rather than hide it.
- A sample, not the whole thing. Twenty to forty pages of dated messages, spread across the entire period, with both names and times. Pick them by a rule (evenly across every month) rather than by hand, and say so, so the sample reads as representative instead of curated.
- An index and a statement of what the pages are. Where the export came from, how many messages it contains, how the sample was chosen, and that the full export is available.
Keep the full export file. The sample should say where each excerpt sits in it so anyone can ask for more context.

Getting the chat out of the phone
- WhatsApp on iPhone: open the chat, tap the name at the top, scroll to Export Chat, choose Without Media, then Save to Files. You get a zip with a text file inside.
- WhatsApp on Android: open the chat, three dots, More, Export chat, Without media, then save or email the text file.
- Messenger: Facebook settings, Download your information, Messages, JSON format, all time. The conversation is a message_1.json file.
- iMessage and SMS: there is no export on the phone; screenshots of a few dated stretches, or a Mac with Messages synced, are the usual routes.
The export lists every message with its date, time and sender. That is what makes a calendar and an even sample possible, and it is why screenshots of a chat are a weaker form of the same evidence: they show a few moments with no way to tell what surrounds them.
Photos
Use the original files from your camera roll. The camera writes the date, and often the place, inside the file; a photo forwarded through WhatsApp or a screenshot of a photo loses both. Put them in date order, one or two to a page, each with a caption: who is in it, where, what was happening. Family members in the photos matter more than scenery.
Examples of what a good packet looks like
- Cover sheet with both names and the receipt number, and an index listing each exhibit and its pages.
- One page: messages per month, March 2024 to October 2026.
- Twenty pages: dated message excerpts spread across those months, both names on every line.
- Eight pages: sixteen photos in date order with captions, including both families.
- Travel records for the in-person meeting, and two signed statements from people who know the couple.
- A short statement from the petitioner describing the relationship's history in dates.
Proof of Relationship builds the first four of those from the export and the photos. It does not decide what is enough for your case; the form instructions and your own judgement do.
Common questions
How many pages of WhatsApp messages should I send for a K-1 visa?
There is no rule, and the forums are full of people who sent hundreds of pages and wished they had not. Twenty to forty pages spread across the whole relationship, with a one-page summary of how many messages were exchanged each month, is the shape most experienced filers recommend.
Do I need to translate messages that are not in English?
USCIS asks for a full English translation of any foreign-language document, with a statement from the translator about their competence. A sample of messages makes that practical; a six-hundred-page chat does not. Check the current form instructions for the exact wording required.
Are screenshots of our chat enough?
People use them, and they are better than nothing. An export is stronger because it carries every date, time and sender and lets you show the whole span of the conversation rather than a handful of moments. If you only have screenshots, date them and keep them in order.
Can I leave out embarrassing messages?
If you choose the sample by a stated rule, such as an even spread across every month, you are not making that choice message by message, and the document can say so. Hand-picked excerpts invite the question of what was left out.
