I-751 evidence: what to include
Form I-751 removes the conditions on a two-year green card obtained through marriage. The question the petition answers is whether the marriage was entered in good faith and has been a shared life since. The evidence is about the life, not the wedding. This page is general information; the form instructions, and a lawyer where the case is not simple, control.
The usual categories
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Shared home | Lease or mortgage with both names, utility bills, driver's licences at the same address, mail to each spouse at the address over time |
| Shared money | Joint bank statements showing both using the account, joint credit cards, joint tax returns, each spouse as the other's beneficiary on insurance, retirement or benefits |
| Shared life | Children's birth certificates, health insurance covering both, car insurance or titles, memberships, travel together, holiday and family photos |
| Other people's knowledge | Signed statements from friends and family who know the couple as a couple: see the affidavit guide |
| Communication | Messages and calls over the period, especially where the couple has lived apart for work, study or family reasons |
Officers are used to seeing the first two categories. They carry the most weight because they are hard to fake and show a life that was shared, not just claimed.
When the paper trail is thin
Many real marriages have little joint paper: one spouse handles the money, the lease is in one name, there are no children yet, or the couple has lived apart because of a job or a visa. That is where the other categories do the work, and where a thin packet gets a request for evidence. The approach that helps is to explain the gap in a short statement and to show the shared life another way: photos across the two years with family on both sides, trips, holidays, messages that show the daily texture of a marriage (groceries, bills, families, plans), and statements from people who have seen the couple together.

Using messages without drowning the officer
A couple's chat over two years is tens of thousands of messages. Nobody will read them, and a four-hundred-page exhibit mostly signals that you did not organize your evidence. What reads well:
- A one-page calendar of how many messages were exchanged each month across the period. It shows continuity at a glance.
- A sample of ten to thirty pages, spread evenly across every month, with dates, times and both names. Everyday content is the point: nobody fakes a two-year argument about whose turn it is to call the landlord.
- A method note saying where the export came from, how many messages it holds, how the sample was chosen, and that the full export is available.
Keep the export file. A sample that gives each excerpt's position in the full chat lets anyone ask for more.
Photos
Choose photos across the whole two years, not one event, and include both families. Use the originals from the camera roll so the date inside the file survives. Caption each: who, where, when. Ten to twenty well-captioned photos in date order is a strong exhibit; a hundred uncaptioned ones is a chore.
Organizing the packet
- A cover letter listing every exhibit, with page numbers.
- Exhibits in the order of the list, each starting on a new page with a label.
- Documents that cover a span of time (bank statements, bills) sampled across the period rather than every month, with a note saying so.
- Copies, not originals, unless the instructions say otherwise.
- A short personal statement from each spouse, in dates: when you met, when you moved in, what the last two years looked like, and an explanation of any gap in the paper trail.
Proof of Relationship builds the calendar, the message sample and the photo pages from your chat export and photos, with an index and a method statement. It organises what you supply; it does not decide what your case needs.
Common questions
What is the strongest evidence for an I-751?
Documents that show a shared life over time and are hard to fabricate: a joint lease or mortgage, joint bank statements both spouses use, joint tax returns, insurance covering both, and children's birth certificates. Everything else supports those.
Can I use WhatsApp messages as I-751 evidence?
Yes, as supporting evidence, and especially where the couple has lived apart. A monthly summary and a dated sample spread across the period reads far better than the whole chat printed out.
How many photos should I include with an I-751?
Enough to cover the period and the people: typically ten to twenty, in date order, captioned with who, where and when, including family on both sides. Quantity does not help; coverage does.
What if we have no joint bank account or lease?
Say so in a short statement with the reason, and show the shared life another way: photos across the period with family, travel, messages showing daily life, statements from people who know you as a couple, and whatever mail or records do exist at the shared address.
